Our firm was founded by Pat M.
Barrett who was born on October 23, 1909, in Lexington, Mississippi.
He attended Southwestern in Memphis (now Rhodes College) and
Ole Miss for his undergraduate studies and attended Cumberland
School of Law in Lebanon, Tennessee.
After graduation in 1933, he was admitted to the bar in both
Tennessee and Mississippi. He
began his law practice in Lexington, serving Holmes County and
Central Mississippi. The
practice has evolved into the nationwide practice our office enjoys
today.
Mr.
Barrett was Holmes County’s first elected County Prosecuting
Attorney, taking office in 1937.
He held that position for 35 years, retiring from the office
undefeated in 1972. He
also served as the attorney for the Holmes County Board of
Supervisors until 1997, after 26 years of service.
In addition to serving Holmes County in an official capacity,
Mr. Barrett donated his legal services free of charge to over 75
churches in the area. He
was a founding member of the Holmes County Junior Chamber of Commerce
and served as the first State President of the Mississippi Junior
Chamber of Commerce in 1936. Mr. Barrett also served as President of the Lexington Rotary
Club and on the Board of Directors of First National Bank of Holmes
County. In 1995, Mr.
Barrett was presented with the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from
the Cumberland School of Law, which is now a part of Samford
University in Birmingham, Alabama. He received this award in a ceremony at the Lexington First
United Methodist Church, where he served as the Chairman of the
Board of Stewards.
Mr. Barrett, known affectionately to his children and grandchildren
as “Pop”, inspired several members of his family to follow him into
the practice of law. His eldest son, Pat M. Barrett, Jr., joined his
father’s practice in February of 1967. John W. (Don) Barrett
followed in 1969. In 1990, their younger sister, Sally Barrett
Williamson, joined the firm. Six of Pat Barrett’s grandchildren have
followed his legacy by joining the profession as well.
The office additionally employs several attorneys from outside the
Barrett family and the areas of practice have expanded to reach many
facets of the law. In August of 2000, the office opened a second
location in Nashville, Tennessee. The practice now includes
attorneys licensed in Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, and Maryland.
Although the community Barrett Law Office, P.A. serves has grown, it
is still our goal to provide our clients with the best
representation possible.
